Variety of scholarships at CSU

Studying at university can be financially difficult for many students but Charles Sturt University (CSU) tries to lessen the burden by offering many undergraduate scholarships. The Charles Sturt Foundation provides over 200 undergraduate scholarships at the Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange and Wagga Wagga campuses of CSU. Most of these scholarships are funded by individuals or organisations that hold a strong belief in supporting the University and its students. As well as the Foundations scholarships, CSU offers a range of equity and merit based scholarships. These include residential school equity grants, excellence scholarships, science scholarships and they also have a number or partnerships and pathway scholarships for CSU/TAFE study pathways. “Students can also apply for Professional Placement Equity Grants,” explains CSU’s Access and Work Manager Debra Johnson. “These are a CSU initiative to assist undergraduate students who must complete a compulsory professional placement as part of their course requirement.” For more information on the scholarships available at CSU visit the site.

Orange Dental Clinic opens wide

Yapug - for Indigenous Students at Newcastle

Yapug is a tertiary preparation program offered by the University of Newcastle for indigenous people aged 18 or over who didn’t complete the HSC or didn’t gain sufficient marks for entry into uni. It is available at the Callaghan campus in Newcastle as a full-time (one year) or part-time (two year) program. Yapug students develop the academic skills and self-discipline required for success in undergraduate study. The Wollotuka Institute Indigenous Student Support and Development Unit offers support services including counselling and student support, the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (qualified tutors helping students with their studies), a well-equipped resource centre, audio and visual materials on Indigenous topics and issues, health support and cultural programs.Upon completion, students will be eligible to apply for any undergraduate degree program offered at the University of Newcastle, including the Bachelor of Medicine. New Topics In Biomedical Science at Newcastle Uni

A Bachelor of Biomedical Science at the University of Newcastle gives graduates the knowledge, problem solving skills, critical reasoning and scientific methods to collaborate on scientific investigations of human structure and function in health and disease at a molecular, cellular and whole systems level. In 2010, the program will offer new topics including an introduction to professional skills in biomedical science, human anatomy and integrative physiology. These new topics will give students opportunities to gain and develop laboratory skills as well as teach them about the anatomy of the whole human body. They will complement and in some cases expand on, the current range of topics including physiology, cell and molecular biology, pharmacology and the analysis of drug actions, bioinformatics, human genetics, genetic engineering, immunology, bacteriology, virology and all aspects of cellular biochemistry. Bachelor of Biomedical Science graduates are well placed for careers in diagnostic pathology laboratories, clinical trials coordination, science and health education and promotion, and postgraduate health-related programs such as medicine and pharmacy. AFS Scholarship to Japan - Applications Open

With the support of Anglo American Metallurgical Coal and Mitsui Coal Holdings Pty Ltd, AFS is pleased to announce that one full scholarship to Japan is available to a lucky student on an Intensive Program (for two months) departing in December 2010. The Akito Sumibo Scholarship, established by Anglo American Metallurgical Coal (AAMC) and Mitsui Coal Holdings Pty Ltd, honours Mr. Akito Sumibo who unexpectedly died in July 2004. This program aims to provide a young Australian with a life-changing experience in Japan. AFS has been working in partnership with Anglo American Metallurgical Coal and Mitsui Coal Holdings Pty Ltd since 2006. During this time five students have been sponsored to experience a two month program in Japan.The scholarship funds the entire AFS participation fee to Japan. Who is eligible? If university is your desired goal, consider these reasons for going to the open day on Friday of Week 3: 1) if UNE offers courses you are interested in, talk to people there about them and tour the facilities 2) if you are applying for early entry you need to make sure you choose the right course eg what is the difference between a degree in Rural Science or one in Agriculture 3) if you intend visiting other uni open days, you need something to compare them against. Special Tertiary Admissions Test(STAT)Dates

Some university courses require you to sit for this test. The Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is a series of related tests designed to assess a range of competencies commonly considered important for success in tertiary study. STAT is administered nationally and is used by many tertiary institutions in Australia as part of their admissions procedure for certain categories of applicants.STAT is used in addition to any other information available when assessing applications for admission. If you have no formal qualifications on which to base your application to a tertiary institution, you may be eligible to be considered for entry to a course by sitting STAT.
Candidates (UAC and non-UAC applicants) can sit STAT in NSW or the ACT through UAC. STAT will be held on Saturday 8 May 2010 and Saturday 29 May 2010 at various locations – Birrong (Sydney), Canberra, Coffs Harbour, Lismore, Newcastle, Nowra, Penrith, Surry Hills and Wollongong. All test sessions have a limited number of places, so you are advised to book early. Social Workers assist people, groups and communities address their problems. With its focus on helping people in need, Social Work is a profession committed to social justice and respect for human rights. Social Workers provide a wide range of services to help people who are distressed or overwhelmed by problems such as poverty, substance abuse, homelessness, conflict or parental difficulties. Services which Social Workers provide include one on one counselling, group mediation, advocacy, social and financial support, legal representation, shelter and referral advice. Some Social Workers contribute to policy development or advise governments on specific welfare issues, such as domestic violence. In this way Social Workers can influence how services are delivered and how society responds to social issues. Social Work has many fields of practice, making it a diverse and rewarding career path with multiple opportunities to make a difference. Social Workers are found in hospitals, welfare departments, either government or private (such as employment services, justice, housing and youth services), women’s refuges, city councils, mental health, disability and aged care facilities and schools, to name just a few. UTAS Faculty of Health Science students now have access to the state-of-the-art and architecturally-stunning $58 million Medical Science 1 (MS1) building.
