Orange Dental Clinic opens wide

Providing general and specialist dentistry services to the Central West, the CSU Dental and Oral Health Clinic, featuring state-of-the-art equipment, aims to service the oral hygiene needs of the local community while providing valuable clinical experience for the University’s dentistry students. “By the end of 2010, patients will have the opportunity to have simple procedures completed by CSU dentistry students if they choose to do so,” said Dr Sabrina Manickam, senior lecturer at the School of Dentistry and Health Sciences. Yapug - for Indigenous Students at Newcastle

Yapug is a tertiary preparation program offered by the University of Newcastle for indigenous people aged 18 or over who didn’t complete the HSC or didn’t gain sufficient marks for entry into uni. It is available at the Callaghan campus in Newcastle as a full-time (one year) or part-time (two year) program. Yapug students develop the academic skills and self-discipline required for success in undergraduate study. The Wollotuka Institute Indigenous Student Support and Development Unit offers support services including counselling and student support, the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (qualified tutors helping students with their studies), a well-equipped resource centre, audio and visual materials on Indigenous topics and issues, health support and cultural programs.Upon completion, students will be eligible to apply for any undergraduate degree program offered at the University of Newcastle, including the Bachelor of Medicine. New Topics In Biomedical Science at Newcastle Uni

A Bachelor of Biomedical Science at the University of Newcastle gives graduates the knowledge, problem solving skills, critical reasoning and scientific methods to collaborate on scientific investigations of human structure and function in health and disease at a molecular, cellular and whole systems level. In 2010, the program will offer new topics including an introduction to professional skills in biomedical science, human anatomy and integrative physiology. These new topics will give students opportunities to gain and develop laboratory skills as well as teach them about the anatomy of the whole human body. They will complement and in some cases expand on, the current range of topics including physiology, cell and molecular biology, pharmacology and the analysis of drug actions, bioinformatics, human genetics, genetic engineering, immunology, bacteriology, virology and all aspects of cellular biochemistry. Bachelor of Biomedical Science graduates are well placed for careers in diagnostic pathology laboratories, clinical trials coordination, science and health education and promotion, and postgraduate health-related programs such as medicine and pharmacy. The Youth Off The Streets Scholarship Program celebrates the gifts and strengths of young people from the Australian community who exhibit extraordinary promise but who lack the personal support networks and resources that will allow them to fulfill that potential. It targets young people aged between 14 and 21 years old, who are disadvantaged and/or may be disconnected from their families or communities and who are permanent residents of this country. Over twenty young people from throughout Australia are awarded scholarships each year to the value of $5,000 each to pursue further education or training so they may realise their potential for a positive future. With the support of Anglo American Metallurgical Coal and Mitsui Coal Holdings Pty Ltd, AFS is pleased to announce that one full scholarship to Japan is available to a lucky student on an Intensive Program (for two months) departing in December 2010. The Akito Sumibo Scholarship, established by Anglo American Metallurgical Coal (AAMC) and Mitsui Coal Holdings Pty Ltd, honours Mr. Akito Sumibo who unexpectedly died in July 2004. This program aims to provide a young Australian with a life-changing experience in Japan. AFS has been working in partnership with Anglo American Metallurgical Coal and Mitsui Coal Holdings Pty Ltd since 2006. During this time five students have been sponsored to experience a two month program in Japan.The scholarship funds the entire AFS participation fee to Japan. Who is eligible? The Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is a series of related tests designed to assess a range of competencies commonly considered important for success in tertiary study. STAT is administered nationally and is used by many tertiary institutions in Australia as part of their admissions procedure for certain categories of applicants.STAT is used in addition to any other information available when assessing applications for admission.
