John Flynn Medical Students Placement Program
Scholarships: Posted 23-6-09 Deadline - No Deadline
If you will be in the first or second year of a medical degree in 2010, you may be eligible for a place in the John Flynn Placement Program. Each year medical students enrolled in accredited medical courses at one of 20 participating universities can apply for a place in the program. From 2009, 300 new placements will be available each year. There is one application intake each year, which is generally between February and April. Once accepted on the JFPP, students are placed with a rural doctor and a local contact person for a minimum of two full weeks per year, normally over a four year period. Students are placed in the same community each year and are expected to complete the entire eight weeks of placements by the last holiday period following completion of their medical course.Students work closely with a rural doctor in a wide variety of health settings and experience one on one mentoring. This type and level of mentoring for students is unique and will supplement the experience of a University clinical rotation in a hospital or general practice. The JFPP covers the cost of travel and accommodation for students to go on placement and ACRRM provides assistance with these arrangements. In addition to this students are paid $500 per week to cover food and living expenses during the placement.

Ind Youth Allowance in the Senate - act now.
Universities: Posted 21-6-09 Deadline - No Deadline
Last week, Greens Senator Sally Hanson-Young and National Senators Fiona Nash and John Williams all spoke on this matter. Part of Senator Williams speech included: "I can say with confidence that, when this legislation comes to the Senate, the Senate will do its job. We know that we have many here in the Senate to support us. We will get this legislation off to a committee... The Senate will do its job. Amendments will be put through the Senate to protect the education of our country students who wish to commence a tertiary education. The legislation will then go to the House and, if the government do not accept the amendments, they will live with the consequences. If they bring on an election and the parents, the teachers and the students are as angry as I have seen them in meetings that I have attended, the government will face the consequences." You will be voting at the next federal election. You, and anyone else who believes this legislation is unfair, need to let Julia Gillard know now. You can email The Hon Julia Gillard MP at: Julia.Gillard.MP@aph.gov.au If you haven't done this yet, do it now or she will not be aware of the huge groundswell of opposition to this in rural Australia. Make your voice heard and let her know what tomorrow's voters think and how you will be affected. Do it today.
