UAI replaced by ATAR -Aust Tertiary Admission Rank
Universities: Posted 10-6-09 Deadline - No Deadline
In 2009, the Universities Admissions Index (UAI) for NSW and ACT Year 12 students is changing to the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). Students should not be worried about any of the changes as they will have no impact on their current studies or choice of university courses for 2010. With the new name there will be some minor changes that students, parents and teachers need to know about.
The number given to the maximum rank in NSW and the ACT will now be an ATAR of 99.95, as opposed to a UAI of 100. This means NSW and ACT students will now be in line with their interstate peers, where the top rank is 99.95. Achieving an ATAR of 99.95 is the same as achieving a UAI of 100 – a student receiving 99.95 is in the top ranked group of students.
The ATAR will indicate a student’s position in relation to the Year 7 students they began high school with. These changes have been introduced to achieve national consistency in the name and reporting of selection ranks. All states (except Queensland) will be introducing the name ATAR for their selection ranks over the next two years. The rules for the ATAR are exactly the same as for the UAI. The scaling process will be the same, the rank order of students will be the same, and the same applicants will be selected for the same courses. Any small change in an ATAR compared to a UAI will see an equivalent change in the course cut-off.

For more information, visit www.uac.edu.au/atar/index.shtml

Want to go to uni? Then work now!
HSC: Posted 1-6-09 Deadline - No Deadline
Many Year 12 students I have spoken to say they intend going to university. A few of your year are working well but I can only hope that many of you are doing a lot of work at home as many of you waste valuable study periods at school. It concerns me that you don't realise that you are competing for places at university, not only against those here at McCarthy, but against 78,000 other people. Are you doing enough? Come and see me if you are concerned.

University of Wollongong Early Entry
Universities: Posted 1-6-09 Deadline - No Deadline
Imagine being rewarded for your hard work before you even sit the HSC! The Early Entry program can take some of the stress out of your final year because you’ll know you already have a place secured at UOW. And you still have the flexibility of being able to change your mind and your UAC preferences. You also have the option of deferring an Early Entry offer. You'll be assessed on your academic record, including your trial HSC, and other criteria such as an interview where you will have the opportunity to show your passion for the degree and/or portfolio. If successful, you’ll receive a guaranteed offer or an offer conditional upon your HSC results. Interviews for Early Entry applicants are held late September. Applications for Early Entry to all faculties will open on 1 July 2009.
More later on this and what you need to do.
