Attn Year 12 2008 re Indep Youth Allowance
Universities: Posted 23-4-09 Deadline - No Deadline
If you are taking a Gap year and are aiming at earning enough money to qualify for the Independent Youth Allowance there are several things you should know. The Centrelink site says: If you apply for Youth Allowance, you will be assessed as either dependent or independent. You are considered independent if: you have worked full-time (at least 30 hours a week) for at least 18 months in the last 2 years, or you have been out of school for at least 18 months and have earned at least 75% of the maximum rate of pay under Wage Level A of the Australian Pay and Classification Scale in an 18 month period. Now for the bad news. This has gone up to $19532. See the link below. Also it is very important to save your pay slips from the date you finished school. If you haven't done this, start saving them from now to minimise any potential problems with Centrelink. You also need to save enough money to support yourself until you qualify for Indep Youth Allowance which won't be until May 2010.
