Griffith Uni at the Gold Coast: courses, accom etc
Universities: Posted 21-5-08 Deadline - No Deadline
This is a long message about innovative courses and why you could consider Griffith but worth reading if you want to live and study on the Gold Coast: the new Arts Degree in which one quarter of the credit points is in "Social Enterprises" - working at charities, libraries, cultural organisations, community groups etc - to promote social inclusion. Or, the innovative Bachelor of Visual Media (ePhotojournalism) Bachelor of Animation and Bachelor of Games Design. There is even a Bachelor of Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art. Opportunities for students wishing to fast track their degrees are available in Business (2 years) and Medical Science (2 years leading to Medicine). The university runs an Honours College for high academic achievers supporting their exchange programs, community participation and providing them with speciality elective courses. A brand new hospital is being built on campus as a training centre of excellence for Medical, Dental, Nursing, Pharmacy, Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy and Psychology students. The new Bachelor of Exercise Science (Pre-Physiotherapy) course leads to a Doctorate in Physiotherapy. The new Bachelor of Biomolecular Science (Advanced) features an industry placement in 3rd year - specialisations include drug design and development and medicinal chemistry. This course is backed up by the new research institutes leading the way in the field of Eskitis (drug discovery) and Glycomics. Flagged new programs include a joint Environment and Business Degree, and a Green Architecture Course linked with Urban Design. And, a new Graduate Diploma of Education - Middle Years, Bachelor of Education (Special Education), B Psych Sc, Grad Dip Education Secondary (to assist in the school's learning environment) . In addition, the University has opened a new film school. Equally impressive is their Career Smarter program designed by the careers office, and the magnificent accommodation with ensuites and swimming pool at only $125/week. No wonder they had a 10% increase in 1st preferences in 2008. You can now apply to them through UAC.

Half Yearly Marks and UAI calculators
School Matters: Posted 12-5-08 Deadline - No Deadline
There are several websites that claim to be able to guesstimate your UAI if you type in your subjects and marks. Please do not rely on these for several reasons. They are based on final HSC marks in each subject and not marks for possibly 2 or 3 assessment tasks which have not included a 3 hour exam. The assessment tasks may be research, oral or visual ones which, while contributing to your overall assessment mark which is 50% of your HSC mark in a subject, does not indicate the mark you will receive in the HSC. The UAIs calcuated at this stage are not for the 2008 cohort and may either give you inflated marks (which means you may stop trying very hard) or very low marks which may mean you give up trying. Please take this advice into consideration and see me if you have any questions about this.
