Bridges to Higher Education
Universities: Posted 6-11-13 Deadline - No Deadline
Bridges to Higher Education is a $21.2m initiative, funded by the Commonwealth Government’s Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program (HEPPP), to improve the participation rates of students from communities under-represented in higher education. The Bridges to Higher Education project brings together the collective resources and experience of the widening participation, equity and social inclusion programs at the University of Western Sydney, the University of Sydney, the University of Technology, Sydney, Macquarie University, and the Australian Catholic University. The partnership extends to include NSW DEC, TAFE NSW, the University Admissions Centre, local government organisations, education offices, Indigenous organisations and other community, philanthropic and social enterprise organisations. This innovative project works with primary and secondary schools, TAFE and community partners in Greater Western Sydney to engage young people who previously might not have considered higher education as an option. More than 1.8 million people live in the region which has traditionally been under-represented in higher education participation rates.

Sponsor Sarah Simmonds to cut her hair for cancer
General: Posted 6-11-13 Deadline - No Deadline
Sarah is cutting her hair for Cancer this month on the 23rd November 2013, the following letter is from her with a link at the bottom for you to donate if you wish: "To my beloved family and friends, I am writing to ask you for your support. In November, this year, I will be cutting most of my hair off and donating it to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program which supplies females suffering with cancer wigs free of charge. I know myself that even coming to this decision to give my hair the chop was hard, even knowing that it will easily grow back. It makes you realise just how difficult it really is for females suffering with cancer. We all know someone who is either battling cancer or who may have lost their fight to cancer. I know myself that the reason I want to donate my hair is because at times we feel we are powerless to the devastating effects of the big C. Some of the most amazing and influential people in my life are suffering with cancer and I want to be able to say that I was able to do something to not only help them help them but help others fighting the same battles. It is when you love something that giving it up means all that much more. It may sound shallow in saying that but for the last 18 years I have become rather attached to my long hair but doing it for people I love more than anything in the world seems like a pretty good trade off. When people who have helped shape your life are faced with hardship and ill health, it makes you realise that this could happen to anyone of us, this does not discriminate. To tell you the truth I had not thought about doing something like this until I took a step back to realise how many people around us were hurting. Seeing how they became embarrassed of their appearance because their treatment took their hair, while I was worried about how to do mine. My Aunty Annie is one of the most giving women you will ever meet. When she was diagnosed with cancer and lost her hair she was embarrassed and missed it when all that those around her continued to see was her resonating beauty. It is not the clothes or the hair that define us it is the person. So I am asking you if you could think about sponsoring me to help those that need something to make them feel beautiful when everything is getting a little too much. I may not be brave enough to shave it all off but I am ready to cut my hair that reaches right down to my lower back to above my shoulders. I would extremely appreciate if you would consider sponsoring me.I wish you all love and happiness, Kindest regards, Sarah"

Job for a Maths/IT school leaver
Apprenticeships/Traineeships: Posted 6-11-13 Deadline - No Deadline
A local job agency is offering a 12 month Business Analyst traineeship. This is part of the email I received: "This role would be suitable to a school leaver with strong IT and maths capabilities and excellent attention to detail. Whilst the traineeship qualification is for a Certificate III Business Administration, this role is quite specialised with the core duties of the role including analysing and reporting on statistical performance data. The traineeship is 12months in duration, however there may be potential for ongoing employment on completion of the qualification. Please feel free to discuss this role with students you believe may be suitable, and should they express an interest, send their resumes to me via return email by COB 15th November 2013." So if you are interested, contact me to get the job description so you can address the selection criteria in your cover letter. Then you need to send me an email with your resume and a cover letter attached so I can pass this on. Look at the examples of cover letters and resumes in the yellow Careers Book 2013 that I gave to all Year 12s. She said both students seeking full time permanent work and gap year students can apply so they get the best applicant from the schools in Tamworth.
