Newstep application date change

The application opening date for the 2013 Newstep program has changed. Applications will now open on Wednesday, 19th December 2012. Newstep is a tertiary preparation program offered by the University of Newcastle. It is a free one-year program which has been designed for 17-20 year olds who didn't complete the Higher School Certificate or who didn’t gain sufficient marks for entry into university

Bridging and Refresher courses

In 2013 some of the University’s Bridging courses will now be known as Refresher courses. These courses are designed to refresh a prospective student’s knowledge in key subject areas. Normally the courses run for 15 hours across one week before the start of Semester one. Courses in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Human Biology are offered as refresher courses to commencing undergraduate students. These courses are not equivalent to the ‘Assumed Knowledge’ as listed in the UAC guide for many of our degree.

Accommodation at Newcastle Uni-changes to applying

The on-campus accommodation application process has changed for the 2013 intake. Applications open on 21 October 2012 and will only remain open until all rooms are filled on a ‘first-in-best-dressed’ policy. This means that it is important for prospective students to apply as soon as possible after the opening date. Prospective students must apply online and pay a $100 non-refundable application fee. Please note: applicants must live more than 100km distance from the University of Newcastle to be eligible to apply. Tours of the on-campus accommodation are currently running every Tuesday and Thursday at 2pm.

Letter from UAC about EAS application?

All McCarthy students will be receiving a letter about EAS eligibility without having filled in an EAS application. The letters are sent automatically and you do not need to do anything. Changes to Uni of Canberra Regional Bonus Points

Due to recent changes to the UAC Education Access Scheme (EAS), the University of Canberra Regional Bonus Points Scheme will be changing for semester 1 2013 admission. Students from NSW schools outside metropolitan Sydney and Canberra will no longer be automatically awarded five (5) bonus points toward their ATAR as in previously years. UAC has classified all regional and remote schools throughout Australia into four EAS disadvantage lists according to criteria developed in consultation with UAC stakeholder institutions. The University of Canberra will award bonus points based on the above method from semester 1 2013. As such, a minimum of four (4) bonus points will be awarded to McCarthy students and will be capped at maximum of ten (10) bonus points for each individual.

Earlier this year NIAS /AIPT and Club Synergy formed a partnership to set up a local Campus in Tamworth to deliver a Fast Track Certificate 4 in Fitness course. So far 18 students have come through the program with the next course to commence on the 3rd October. The Course offers;
• Certificate IV in Fitness which qualifies graduates to become Personal Trainers • Practical and hands on training and support delivered locally utilising different venues and environments.• Delivered by the Australian Institute of Personal Trainers’ local campus director, Peter Annis-Brown, who has more than 14 years’ experience in the sport and fitness industry.• Each course in limited to ensure each student gets the highest level of personal support.• Graduation rate more than 3 times the industry average for publicly funded places.• Post-graduate employment rate of 80%

To go on any construction site (eg holiday work, work experience or getting an apprenticeship in any of the building trades) requires the COnstruction Induction White Card before you can set foot on a construction site. You can do the courses at TAFE or the Community College for a day at approx $120 or do an online course at home for $58. See me for details.
