2012: New Paramedic Science Program at UQ

We are pleased to announce the introduction of the new Bachelor of Paramedic Science program to be offered from Semester 1, 2012 at UQ’s Ipswich campus. The 3 year full-time program requires English as a pre-requisite and recommends study of one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics. The program will prepare graduates for entry-level employment as an ambulance paramedic. Students will undertake clinical placements with the Queensland Ambulance Service throughout the program to gain practical “hands-on” experience in the role of a paramedic.

Telstra has a new initiative, designed to encourage young people to take an interest in careers involving technology, engineering and the sciences. Targeted at existing Year 10 and Year 11 school work placement programs, this program seeks to demonstrate the wide range of careers that technology can lead to, and specifically the opportunities available through working for Telstra. Students placed through the Telstra Work Experience Program would have the opportunity to be involved in a diverse set of areas such as rolling out new IT systems across Telstra, developing online applications for Telstra customers, the design and operation of Telstra’s Next G mobile network and network construction field activities including Fibre to the Premises, Transmission, Switching and Broadband builds. Business Cadets combine study at the university of their choice in Sydney with paid work at either UBS Investment Bank or Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Sydney. The Program allows cadets to choose from a broad range of university degrees, including economics, commerce, business, finance, I.T., arts, liberal studies and social science. Scholarship holders will receive up to $10,000 per year during their undergraduate or graduate entry full-time professional studies. Part-time students will receive up to $5,000 per year. UTS Bachelor of Accounting scholarship $43,000

Information night will be held on Tuesday 24 May 2011 or for more information, please see me or go to the website. The closing date for Round 1 applications is fast approaching – Friday 10 June. Students will need to have their application form signed off by the school before this date. Application forms can be downloaded from our website. From 2012 students in the Bachelor of Accounting program will receive a scholarship valued at:$14,000 for the first year of the course;
$14,500 for the second year of the course; and $7,500 for the first half of the third year of the course. In addition to the scholarship, which runs for 2½ years of the 3-year course, students can claim a Recruitment Incentive of $ 7,500 in their third year if recruited by a sponsor organisation (see below). This would bring the total received over the three years to $43,500

What jobs pay most after uni?

The good news for graduates was that, in spite of the economic downturn, the median annual starting salary for bachelor degree graduates increased by $3,000 between 2008 and 2009, growing from $45,000 to $48,000.
The three fields of education with the highest median staring salaries in 2009 were dentistry ($70,000), optometry ($64,500) and engineering ($57,500), while the three fields with the lowest median starting salaries in 2009 were humanities and social sciences (each with $42,000), art and design ($37,300) and pharmacy ($35,000).
